On November 14, Women’s Xchange hosted its fall event, “Bringing Research to Life Using Innovative Multimedia Approaches.” Featuring experts in communicating research through video, theatre and photography, the sold-out event attracted researchers and trainees, $15K Challenge award recipients, and community groups from across the province. Marilyn Emery, president and CEO of Women’s College Hospital, gave an opening address, while Dr. Paula Rochon was the master of ceremonies for the day. Dr. Mike Evans—a physician and founder of the Health Design Lab at the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute—was the first pres enter and shared how he has used videos, infographics and social media to engage patients and the public. Vrenia Ivonoffski, the founding artistic director of ACT II STUDIO, spoke about the art of transforming research into theatre. She has collaborated with researchers to produce performances related to cancer, breast health and dementia, and she shared her experiences producing such works. Liam O’Rinn—a documentary writer, director and producer—provided the audience with tips on how to produce engaging videos. And Nancy Viva Davis, a member of the Red Wagon Collective, shared a photography project she and her colleagues have conducted with women experiencing exclusion, insecure housing and homelessness in Toronto. The event closed with remarks from Nancy Kennedy, assistant deputy minister of health system strategy and policy at the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, followed by a networking session.
