Achieving Equity for Women: Are We There Yet?

Fall Event: November 5, 2015

On Thursday November 5th, Women’s Xchange hosted our 5th event: Achieving Equity for Women: Are We There Yet? This event was hosted at the brand new Women’s College Hospital and Pink Cube. Over 100 people were in attendance; the audience was a diverse mix of young and established professionals from a variety of sectors. Marilyn Emery, president and CEO of Women’s College Hospital, gave an opening address while Dr. Paula Rochon was the master of ceremonies for the day. Jennifer Dockery, director of primary care and equity at Women’s College Hospital, introduced the moderator of the afternoon’s discussion: Jennifer Wells (Business Columnist, Toronto Star). Each of the four speakers had an opportunity to address the audience on equity for women in their sector before Jennifer Wells moderated a very engaging cross-discussion on strategies for increasing equity for women. Kim Stanton, Legal Director of the Women’s Legal Education and Action Fund, discussed equity for women from a legal perspective focusing on historic and current issues for women. Amanda Alvaro, Founder and Managing Director of Narrative PR, addressed equity from the advertising sector with special focus on how equity for women has been changing from one generation to the next. Mary Lou Maher, Business Unit Leader, GTA Audit & Chief Inclusion Officer for KPMG, discussed equity for women in the business sector and shared strategies for increasing equity in this sector including mitigating unconscious biases. Dr. Danielle Martin, Vice President Medical Affairs and Health System Solutions for Women’s College Hospital, addressed equity for women from the health care sector, explaining the ways in which equity significantly affects health. After the moderated discussion, the floor was open for audience questions and equity “pop ups” which gave audience members to share brief 1-minute updates with the rest of the room on their own equity initiatives. The event concluded with networking and appetizers in the Pink Cube reception space.
